10 Minute Takeaway: Asking Questions by Lynne Barrie & Tom Stenson

In this 10-minute takeaway hosted live at the Driving Instructor Convention in March 2025, Lynne Barrie and Tom Stenson discuss the importance of active listening and asking pupils the right questions, whether on driving lessons or in your Standards Check.

Route Planning by Mike Fowler

Effective route planning is key to meaningful driver training—knowing your local training areas allows you to adapt lessons, manage task demand, and better target your pupil’s learning needs. This article explores how smart area selection can make or break lesson success, especially when tackling challenges like clutch control or roundabouts.

"A learning need in a pupil can only be targeted by an instructor if the instructor has a suitable training area to facilitate that specific bit of learning.

The ADI1 pays specific reference to this, specifically saying: There is no point taking a pupil to an area with no roundabouts when the agreed lesson plan is ‘roundabouts’.

And I couldn’t agree more!

You’ll find if you are delivering mini lessons, the next learning need isn’t too dissimilar to the previous one. It may be the learning need is the same, but the route itself provides the increase in task demand.

A simple example of this would be moving from “housing estate” junctions onto “main road” junctions, and leaving the housing estate. The task and the prerequisite jobs are the same, but the increase in traffic provides the task demand to keep the learner learning."
